JP Morgan’s Justin Nelson Draws on Experience to Guide Hiring

Justin Nelson brings both a demanding day job and a personal stake to his push for better neurodiverse hiring practices in financial services. As Managing Director and Head of the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team at JP Morgan Private Bank in Connecticut, Nelson leads a group overseeing more than $15 billion in client assets. That professional background, combined with his own understanding of the barriers neurodiverse individuals face, shapes the framework he now shares with other firms.

Seeing Past the Interview

Nelson identifies communication as the single biggest obstacle standing between neurodiverse candidates and job offers. “For neurodiverse candidates, the biggest challenge is typically communication, their ability to interact with people,” he says, comparing it to how effortless ordinary conversation feels to most people.

What makes that obstacle costly, Justin Nelson JP Morgan argues, is what it hides. He describes candidates who struggle with small talk but show remarkable creative thinking or computational ability, traits well suited to financial services work that depends on close analysis. “Employers really need to change how they think about engaging with these people,” he states, arguing that firms which only judge candidates on interview performance miss out on real talent.

Nelson’s approach once someone is hired centers on clear structure. He recommends assigning specific tasks and explaining exactly how they connect to a larger plan, since employees who understand that structure often perform with exceptional precision.

To spread this thinking beyond his own team, Nelson partners with Adelphi University’s Bridges Program and Broad Futures, both aimed at helping neurodiverse individuals move successfully from school into steady employment. He calls that transition the hardest part of the journey for most candidates, and argues that firms across financial services stand to benefit from taking it more seriously.
