In Philadelphia’s growing men’s grooming scene, Floyd Klein has built a name for himself as a razor cutting specialist whose hands achieve what many can only hope for—hair that looks lived-in and natural from the moment a client leaves the chair.
Razor Sharp Focus
“Razor cutting creates movement and texture that scissors simply can’t match,” says Floyd Klein, whose specialty has drawn clients from across the city to Floyd Klein Studios. “When done right, it gives hair a casual, lived-in look that paradoxically takes serious skill to achieve.”
Klein’s fascination with this specialized technique began during his formative training at the London School of Barbering (LSB), where he went to sharpen his skills after inheriting his grandfather’s barbershop. What started as a training program turned into a passionate pursuit of a cutting style that’s equal parts science and art.
“At LSB, I got completely pulled into razor work,” Klein explains. “It calls for steady hands, deep knowledge of how hair moves, and the guts to cut differently than most barbers are taught.”
The technique involves using a straight razor to cut hair at various angles, creating soft edges and natural texture that grows out smoothly. While clippers create uniformity and scissors offer clean lines, razor cutting creates flow and dimension that looks increasingly natural as it grows.
From Family Tradition to Modern Mastery
Klein’s path to becoming a razor cutting expert wasn’t what his family expected. Despite being born into a barbering dynasty—his great-grandfather trained under William Francis Truefitt, and his grandfather ran a neighborhood shop for decades—Klein initially pursued accounting and sports analytics.
“My family thought I’d made the smart choice going into finance,” Klein recalls. “But after my grandfather passed and left me the shop, I felt pulled back to something that had always been in my blood.”
What could have been a simple continuation of family tradition instead became a modernization. At Floyd Klein Studios, classic techniques merge with contemporary styles, creating a unique approach that draws both old-school loyalists and style-conscious younger clients.
“The beauty of what we do at Floyd Klein Studios is taking timeless techniques and applying them to today’s styles,” Klein says. “Razor cutting isn’t new—barbers have used straight razors for centuries—but we’re using it to create modern looks that work for busy lives.”
The Science of the Slice
Klein’s background as a Sports Performance Analyst for the Philadelphia Phillies gives him a distinct way of looking at hair. Where many barbers see only the surface, he sees patterns, angles, and potential movement.
“Hair follows rules just like athletic performance does,” Klein explains. “At Floyd Klein Studios, we study how each person’s hair grows, which way it naturally wants to fall, and how different cutting angles will affect its movement.”
This analytical approach has made Klein particularly adept at working with clients who have struggled to find styles that work with their hair rather than against it. By understanding growth patterns and using razor techniques that work with them, he’s able to create styles that require minimal styling but look consistently good.
Education Beyond the Cut
Klein has become known not just for giving great cuts but for teaching clients how to maintain them. Each appointment at Floyd Klein Studios includes advice on home care, styling techniques, and product recommendations.
“The haircut is just the start,” Klein insists. “The real test is how it looks when you style it yourself the next morning, and the morning after that.”
This educational approach extends beyond his studio. Klein occasionally teaches at hair schools in New York City, mentoring the next generation of stylists in razor techniques. His Substack newsletter, “The Cutting Edge,” has become a resource for both professionals and style-conscious men seeking expert guidance.
Community Connections
Like his grandfather before him, Klein sees his barbershop as more than a business—it’s a community space where relationships form and conversations flow. The atmosphere at Floyd Klein Studios encourages connection, something Klein believes is increasingly valuable.
“A good barbershop is one of the few places left where people from different walks of life sit together and talk face-to-face,” Klein says. “At Floyd Klein Studios, we care as much about that atmosphere as we do about the cuts.”
Through his specialized skills, educational approach, and community focus, Floyd Klein has carved out a unique position in Philadelphia’s grooming landscape. Floyd Klein Studios continues the legacy his family started, while reshaping what a modern barbershop can be.
