Talkspace is a new app that’s developed for people who want to see a therapist but don’t have the time to visit an office. With verified therapists, Talkspace hopes that therapy is accessible to anyone despite their time constraints. It’s also a great app for those who feel more comfortable texting instead of talking to someone, allowing them to reach out to a therapist without feeling any anxiety. As therapist Alicia Winkle claims, Talkspace could also help those who suffer from depression as sometimes they might have a difficult time leaving their beds. What she noted as an important component about therapy that Talkspace provides is the ability for clients to have a safe space when speaking about their problems.
When you’re depressed most people think one can “snap out of it”, however, that’s a false statement as depression is more than just feeling sad. Depression is a mental illness just like any physical illness, it cannot be controlled just by being told to act a certain way. Very few understand it the way therapists do because of the negativity around it in media. One case of negative stereotypes was the show “13 Reasons Why” which only propagated how people viewed depression. People only think that there’s “one” type of depression when depression varies from person to person. Depression is more than how much someone has in their life. There seems to be a stereotype with depression that one must have nothing in their life. However, even celebrities who seem to have it “all” are sufferers of depression. You can be successful and still have depression, depression doesn’t differentiate between lifestyles.
With Talkspace, people could speak to a licensed therapists without feeling that they’re being judged for their illness.
