As the name wiki suggests, Wikipedia gives editors the opportunity to edit any unprotected pages and upgrade articles instantly for readers. One is not required to register so as to edit Wikipedia articles. Wikipedians do an excellent job that contributes much to Wikipedia as a whole. Some pages are restricted from editing and are symbolized by a lock icon on the top right of the page. These articles can, however, be edited indirectly by submitting an “edit request”. You can present a request by clicking the view source tab on the same page and using the “Submit an edit request” link. There are two Wikipedia techniques of editing: typical editing via wiki markup (wikitext) and the new VisualEditor (VE).
Wikipedia articles aim at stating the facts, so a formal style becomes necessary when editing articles. The article should be straight to the point, avoiding essays, opinions, and argument writing. The article edited should be extensive and observe the “neutral point of view” of existing knowledge on an individual subject. All edited articles should be adequately cited from reliable sources since Wikipedia only provides already publicized information. Wikipedia encourages editors to gather information from books, news archives and journals rather that website blogs. Sources required for articles on biographies are apparently more stringent.
Most people perceive editing Wikipedia pages to be a daunting task but trust me, most Wikipedia pages are simple to edit. There are two techniques of editing Wikipedia pages:
• Wiki markup editing – is selected by clicking the Edit tab at the top of the page or on a section edit link. A new page appears comprising of contents that can be edited. Wiki markup is utilized comprehensively across Wikipedia for content such as tables and columns, inline citations, hyperlinks, footnotes among others.
• The VisualEditor – this option is user-friendly and enables an editor to edit pages without necessarily learning wikitext markup. It is only accessible by registered users by an opt-in choice present through personal preferences.
The Wikipedia writing service community has advanced style principles to ensure facts and articles show in a standardized manner. An elementary list of wiki markup is located on the cheatsheet. Above the edit box is an edit toolbar that lets logged in users to insert automatically and format different facets of wiki code.
After editing, you are expected to note down a brief edit summary in the small area below the edit box – this is meant to explain the changes made and you may use calligraphy.
